From vintage hot air balloons to red double-decker buses, Hamleys new flagship turns every corner into a world of wonder for kids, families, and anyone who refuses to grow up.
Stiltwalkers, a mime, a juggler or two. A ringmaster rallying all to the rollicking ruckus. Hamley and Hattie, and a crowd of kids already several levels more excited than the adults doing their best to supervise them—while also raring to get in on the fun.
And no, this isn’t just any toy store. Hamleys, the world’s oldest and best-loved toy shop, first opened in Holborn, London, in 1760. Founded by William Hamley, a Cornishman with a dream to create the best toy shop in the world, it has grown into a global brand with 175 stores across 12 countries, including the UK, India, UAE, China, Mexico—and now the Philippines. Over 265 years later, Hamleys is still synonymous with magical experiences, joy for children, and playful spectacle for anyone who walks through its doors.
The new Hamleys Philippines at Bonifacio High Street opened on May 30, Saturday, and the expansive flagship store is gorgeous! Not in an ultra-sleek, luxury-retail way. More like someone gave the visual merchandising team permission to remember what it felt like to be eight years old, while still keeping things posh. Vintage-inspired details and play zones everywhere. Color, movement, surprises tucked into nooks and crannies. Shelves that make you stop, look twice, and then call somebody over to see what you found.
It is whimsical without being chaotic and playful without looking like a daycare threw up in your face. The kind of place where you keep saying “just one more look” and then find yourself halfway across the room staring at something completely different. I planned on staying two hours, tops. I stayed for three and a half; I regret nothing.
And that’s kind of the point.
Where retail turns into the best kind of spectacle
Hamleys isn’t just expanding in the Philippines—it’s staging a reminder of what experiential retail is supposed to feel like when it’s done right.
The new flagship at Bonifacio High Street sits inside Bonifacio Global City, a 240-hectare lifestyle and business district that sees over 120,000 visitors daily. That foot traffic matters, but what matters more is what happens once people step inside. This isn’t a “browse and buy” situation. It’s a wander-until-you-forget-why-you-came-in kind of place.
The store spans 530 square meters and houses over 15,000 toys, but numbers don’t really capture the experience. The layout is built like a maze of curiosity: immersive zones, interactive displays, and installations that pull you in whether you intended to engage or not. There’s a hot air balloon and a red London double-decker bus installation that immediately become photo magnets, but are also oddly convincing portals into another mood entirely. Somewhere between tourist attraction and childhood flashback.
There’s the cast of familiar Hamleys characters—Hamley and Hattie Bear, the toy soldier, the circus ringmaster, the rag doll—moving through the space, greeting kids and gently derailing adult seriousness in the process.
The hero zones take play to the next level
Hamleys didn’t just sparkle for opening day—its experience zones are impossible to ignore, pulling visitors into high-speed races, brick-building, and hands-on fun before they even know it. One of the standout features is Ralleyz, a fast-paced RC racetrack experience that turns casual browsing into something closer to competitive sport. Nearby, a LEGO Playlab invites hands-on building energy that tends to make even the most “I’m just here to supervise” adults drift toward the bricks.
Then there’s the experiential Barbie Zone, which leans fully into imagination-meets-style: a children’s boutique and salon where mini creators can experiment with beauty, nails, and DIY accessories. It’s part play, part runway fantasy, and entirely designed to keep kids in that sweet spot where creativity runs the show. Every corner of the store seems engineered for interruption—in the best possible way. You don’t just move through it; you get rerouted by it.
The opening day itself was a grand launch: a lively character parade, face painting, music performances, exclusive giveaways, and meet-and-greets, giving the space the feel of a cheerful festival or old-timey carnival rather than a retail store.
Adults are not immune (but that’s no problem)
The kids were easy to spot. They were the ones having an excellent time. The adults were the ones struggling to be responsible, looking like they had chugged pitchers of nostalgia—and honestly, that’s no problem at all. I, on the other hand, couldn’t quite control my glee and giddiness. Overstimulation is real. So is the sudden urge to buy things your parents said no to in 1980.
There’s a specific kind of psychological pull that toy stores tap into with precision. You walk in thinking you’re there for someone else (the kids, of course), and five minutes later you’re emotionally negotiating with your inner eight-year-old about whether you still need that thing you were once denied on principle. Hamleys just amplifies that effect with the best kind of production value: playful, generous, unapologetically joyful.
Why this flagship actually works
Hamleys has been delighting families in the Philippines for years, and the new flagship takes that partnership further, bringing the brand’s signature sense of wonder to one of the country’s most vibrant cities. “Hamleys has been a cherished destination for families in the Philippines since its arrival in 2014. This new flagship store marks an exciting milestone as we continue to elevate the experience, bringing together the brand’s heritage of wonder with Filipinos’ appreciation for joyful family experiences,” said Anthony T. Huang, CEO and President of SSI Group, Inc.
From Hamleys’ side, the message is consistent with its global positioning: create destinations, not just stores. Places where families, tourists, and kids of all ages can treat shopping as an event rather than a transaction.
Because while the 15,000 toys and branded zones matter, what really makes an impression is the atmosphere: lively, layered, slightly overwhelming in a way that somehow still feels generous and pulled together. At the end of it all, the kids leave instantly gratified; the grownups leave a little lighter of heart than when they first walked in. That alone is worth the visit.
Sometimes, healing your inner child looks like therapy and self-help workshops. Turns out it can also look a lot like getting sidetracked in “The Finest Toy Shop in the World” on a Saturday afternoon.
