The Embassy of Spain in the Philippines recently celebrated Spain’s National Day, focusing on a shared heritage, bilateral ties, and cultural exchange

This year’s Dia de España celebration was held on October 10, 2024, at the Fairmont Makati, hosted by His Excellency Miguel Utray Delgado, the Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines. This event provided a meaningful occasion to commemorate Spain’s National Day ahead of its official date on October 12. The festive gathering honored Spain’s rich cultural heritage while highlighting the important historical and contemporary connections between Spain and the Philippines.

With a diverse mix of guests in attendance—from diplomats and business leaders, to political personalities, expatriates from all over, and Spanish nationals in the Philippines—the venue buzzed with enriching conversation. Ambassador Utray Delgado and Consul General Ignacio Sánchez Taboada warmly welcomed guests at the reception line before they entered the Fairmont’s ballroom.

He officially opened the festivities with a rousing speech, in which he emphasized the significance of cultural exchange and its role in strengthening bilateral ties. He stated: “We will continue to promote Spain in the Philippines and the Philippines in Spain through different programs developed by our Ministry of Education and the excellent activity of Instituto Cervantes.” He also shared insights from his two years in the Philippines, highlighting the impressive capacity for transformation he has witnessed and the substantial potential for further developing bilateral relations. Additionally, the ambassador noted the important role of economic partnerships and the active involvement of the business community in fostering these connections.

These sentiments were echoed by the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary, who also spoke at the event. He highlighted that many young Filipinos are pursuing studies in Spain, further enriching the cultural fabric of both nations. This exchange not only strengthens individual connections but also supports the broader narrative of friendship and collaboration.

Savoring Spain’s culinary and cultural heritage

A definite attraction of the evening was the culinary experience, with an array of authentic Spanish dishes prepared by Fairmont’s Executive Chef Daniel Guevara and Executive Sous Chef Martin Carrasco Carrillo, both from Spain. Their offerings included a delightful selection of cheeses, tapas, paellas, and desserts, providing guests with a true taste of Spanish cuisine.

For perfect pairings to the food, guests enjoyed a variety of free-flowing fine Spanish wines and Estela Galicia beer, which enhanced the convivial atmosphere. As the evening unfolded, guests engaged in lively conversations, sharing their experiences and connections to Spain. The presence of Spanish expatriates and business professionals added depth to the gathering, as many discussed their roles in fostering economic ties and cultural exchanges between the two nations.

Building bridges for the future

The event also served as a platform to discuss the contributions of the Spanish business community in the Philippines. Spanish companies have increasingly invested in sectors such as renewable energy and infrastructure, demonstrating a commitment to the Philippines’ growth and development. The engagement of these business leaders underscored the important role of economic partnerships in strengthening bilateral relations.

Throughout the evening, it became evident that the ties between Spain and the Philippines extend beyond history; they reflect a dedication to mutual progress. Cultural exchanges, educational initiatives, and joint ventures are creating a more interconnected future, enhancing understanding of each other’s traditions and customs.

The festivities came to a close, imbued with a renewed commitment to nurturing the ties that unite Spain and the Philippines. The Dia de España fiesta was more than just a celebration of a national day; it was a fresh affirmation of the enduring friendship and shared values that characterize the relationship between the two nations.
