BAGUIO CITY – Ambassador Peter Kell will be in Baguio City from 30-31 January 2023 to promote the New Zealand Manaaki Scholarship Programme. Ambassador Kell will meet with stakeholders to encourage young Cordillerans to apply for post-graduate studies in New Zealand.
On 1 February 2023, the New Zealand Government will open its applications for post-graduate Manaaki Scholarships in New Zealand. This scholarship is funded by the New Zealand Government through the New Zealand Aid Programme. This year, 16 qualified individuals will be awarded scholarships to pursue post-graduate degrees on specific areas of study in New Zealand.
For school year 2023, eight young Filipinos will be heading to New Zealand for their post-graduate degrees. They are Saidin Ali (Master of Marine Studies, University of Auckland), Efren Gabriel Alvarado (Master of Disaster Risk and Resilience, University of Canterbury), Mary Jill Banta (Master of Environmental Science, Victoria University of Wellington), Chareen Joy Guzman (Master of Environmental Policy and Management, Lincoln University), Jay Jomar Quintos (PhD Indigenous Studies, The University of Otago-Dunedin), Nina Joan Revalde (Masters in Engineering Management, University of Auckland), Keith David Salarda (Master of Disaster Management, University of Auckland), and Leslie Sampollo (PhD Marine Science, University of Auckland).
Ambassador Peter Kell would like to encourage more indigenous and Cordilleran young academics and practitioners in the relevant fields to apply to the programme.

We manaaki our partner governments by sending scholars back better equipped to contribute to their countries’ development.” Ambassador Kell said during the Pre-Departure Briefing for Manaaki New Zealand scholars held at the Embassy in Manila on 12 January 2023.
Priority sectors for study include post-graduate degrees in climate change and the environment, food security and agriculture, renewable energy, disaster risk management, and public sector management including peace and conflict studies and indigenous studies.
The application portal will open at 12.00am (midnight) NZT Wednesday 1 February, and close 12.00 pm (midday) Tuesday 28 February. It will be open to eligible candidates from the public, private and civil society sectors. Scholarships will cover full tuition, living expenses, establishment allowance, medical and travel insurance and travel to and from the Philippines. Successful applicants from this selection round will be placed into MA or PhD studies commencing in 2024 providing that border and visa settings continue to enable this at that time.
To qualify, applicants should be under 40 years of age at the time of commencing their scholarship; have at least 1 year of work experience (or 2 years if including internship and volunteer work); and agree to return to the Philippines for a minimum of two years upon completion of study.
