The Danish retailer’s largest Philippine store brings more room for discovery, whimsy, and those delightfully unnecessary purchases that somehow make everyday life a little brighter.
In today’s chaotic world, where adulting feels like a never-ending software update nobody asked for and even your banking app seems determined to test your patience, I fully support a little delulu as self-care.
Which is probably why I found myself happily joining the crowd at the opening of Flying Tiger Copenhagen’s new flagship store at Glorietta 2 last week.
For the uninitiated, Flying Tiger is that wonderfully dangerous Danish wonderland where you walk in intending to buy one small thing and somehow emerge with stationery, quirky home finds, party supplies, a travel organizer, and three items you didn’t know existed five minutes earlier. Their entire concept is built around affordable, design-led everyday products and that irresistible treasure-hunt feeling that turns shopping into a game.
The Scandinavian art of buying things you never knew you needed
The new Glorietta branch is the brand’s largest store in the Philippines to date, occupying a spacious 210-square-meter footprint on the second level of Glorietta 2.
More importantly, it gives Flying Tiger room to do what it does best: surprise people.
Unlike traditional retailers that neatly categorize your needs and send you on your way, Flying Tiger has always leaned into discovery. The store’s signature maze-like layout encourages wandering, browsing, and the occasional “Wait, why do I suddenly need this?” moment. It’s retail as curiosity cabinet, with every turn revealing something unexpected.
That sense of discovery is amplified by the flagship’s expanded footprint. With more space comes a broader assortment of products spanning home, travel, stationery, games, seasonal collections, and family-focused essentials. The inventory shifts regularly, giving frequent visitors a reason to return and see what’s new.
In an age when algorithms seem determined to show us more of the same, there is something oddly refreshing about a store built around surprise.
Minimalism called. I let it go to voicemail.
As a card-carrying Gen Xer, I have long accepted that minimalism is simply not my calling.
Give me cute, colorful, slightly unnecessary objects that spark joy and confound my budget a little.
Thankfully, Flying Tiger specializes in exactly that.
The expanded flagship carries a broader assortment of products that range from practical to delightfully random, often occupying that sweet spot where functionality and whimsy intersect.
For homebodies and frequent hosts, there are playful yet functional pieces designed to elevate everyday gatherings. Glassware, kitchen accessories, and decorative finds bring a distinctly Scandinavian sensibility, balancing clean design with a healthy sense of humor.
Travelers and commuters will likely find themselves lingering in the travel section, which offers organizers, travel kits, and clever accessories designed to make life on the move a little more manageable. Students are also well catered to, particularly with the arrival of colorful back-to-school items that manage to make organization feel far less like a chore.
One of the newest additions is the Cuddle and Care collection, featuring soft essentials for infants and toddlers. Meanwhile, the exclusive Cloudy Comfort collection arrives just in time for Manila’s rainy season, with water-resistant tote bags, umbrellas, and rainwear that inject a bit of personality into grey, soggy days.
The beauty of Flying Tiger, though, is that the best finds are often the ones you weren’t looking for in the first place.
The real reason I keep coming back
But products alone don’t explain Flying Tiger’s appeal.
What I love most is that the store has quietly become one of my favorite places to spend time with my daughter.
We wander the aisles together, laughing at ridiculous finds, debating what we absolutely do not need, and then buying some of those things anyway. Somewhere between the novelty notebooks, quirky kitchen gadgets, and oddly specific party accessories, a simple shopping trip becomes an afternoon of conversation.
That’s a surprisingly valuable thing these days.
Many modern retail experiences are optimized for speed. Click, add to cart, checkout. Efficient, certainly. Memorable, not always.
Flying Tiger operates differently. It invites lingering. It rewards curiosity. It creates tiny moments of delight that feel increasingly rare in a world designed to rush us from one task to the next.
You see it all around the store. Friends showing each other bizarre gadgets. Parents negotiating purchases with delighted children. Shoppers picking up an item, laughing, and calling someone over to look at it.
The merchandise may get people through the door, but the experience is what keeps many of them coming back.
Whimsy is a valid shopping category
Perhaps that’s why the brand has cultivated such a loyal following around the world. Beneath the colorful products and playful displays is a surprisingly effective philosophy: everyday life doesn’t have to be boring.
Not every purchase needs to solve a major problem. Sometimes a notebook with a silly cover, a brightly colored mug, or an unexpectedly clever gadget serves a purpose that can’t be measured in pure practicality. Sometimes it simply makes you smile.
And honestly, there are worse ways to spend your money.
In a world that feels a little too serious lately, Flying Tiger’s newest flagship offers a reminder that small pleasures still matter. Cute stuff. Good design. Quality time with people you love. A tiny dose of delulu. As wellness plans go, I’ve certainly seen worse.
