Stronger Together: Korea and the Philippines Celebrate Ties That Go Beyond Borders

A night of unity, diplomacy, and fresh beginnings — all under one roof in Manila

October 1, 2025, was no ordinary evening at the Grand Hyatt Manila. The Grand Ballroom buzzed with energy as the Embassy of the Republic of Korea hosted a joint celebration of its National Day and Armed Forces Day. At the helm were Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa and Madame Lee Eun-hwa, welcoming a vibrant mix of diplomats, government officials, business leaders, and members of the Filipino and Korean communities. The event was no ordinary formal affair — it was a joyful reaffirmation of a decades-strong friendship.

Setting the tone with music, meaning, and pride

The evening opened with a solemn prayer and the Philippine National Anthem, grounding the event in respect and unity. From there, the atmosphere lifted with stirring performances by baritone Byeongin Park, soprano Rachel Gerodias Lark, and the Korean International School Philippines choir. Their music added emotion and elegance, while also reminding everyone of the cultural richness both nations share.

From history to future: leaders share a powerful vision

In his address, Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa reflected on the deep-rooted partnership between Korea and the Philippines — forged in shared values, mutual respect, and decades of cooperation. But his message wasn’t just retrospective. He emphasized looking ahead to new opportunities for collaboration, from regional projects to global initiatives.

Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Maria Theresa Dizon-De Vega followed with a headline-worthy announcement: the Philippines will soon open a consulate in Busan. It’s a strategic move that’s expected to boost trade, tourism, education, and people-to-people connections in Korea’s dynamic southern region. She also highlighted the strong commitment of both President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and President Lee Jae-myung to deepen the countries’ strategic partnership.

More than a celebration — a shared commitment to growth

While the evening honored tradition and national pride, it also created space for genuine connection. Conversations flowed, partnerships were strengthened, and the spirit of collaboration was unmistakable. The announcement of a Philippine consulate in Busan added momentum to a relationship already rich in history — and ripe with future potential.

This wasn’t just a diplomatic gathering. It was a powerful reminder that when nations stand side by side, they don’t just celebrate — they build.
