CONQuest 2023: Indie Game Devs and Tabletop Area Shine as Silver Lining for Con-Goers

CONQuest is considered one of the biggest pop culture conventions in the Philippines and has been around since 2017. It is now back for its 2023 edition, promising to be bigger than its predecessors. The event was held on July 2-4 at SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

CONQuest 2023 boasted a lineup of special guests and headliners, including renowned streamers and content creators such as Fuslie, Valkyrae, JoeyTheAnimeMan, AriaSaki, iGumdrop, Sykkuno, LilyPichu, Michael Reeves, and Pokimane for the three-day event.

Although the event did not receive an overwhelmingly positive response from the public due to controversies surrounding overcrowding and long queues to enter the venue, there is always a silver lining to every situation.

Showcasing Innovation: Independent Game Devs Captivate Attendees

Independent game developers and tabletop games became the show stealer at the event, captivating the attention of many attendees. These innovative and creative game creators showcased their unique visions and brought forth a refreshing perspective to the gaming world.

With their imaginative narratives, immersive gameplay mechanics, and artistic designs, independent game developers left a lasting impression on those who sought a break from mainstream titles.

During the event, Kooapps, an indie gaming studio known for its focus on creative mobile games, allowed attendees to test their latest creation, Snake.io. This game offers a modern twist on a childhood classic, transforming it into a highly competitive and engaging experience.

Furthermore, attendees had the opportunity to try out the upcoming game Chibi Clash during the event. Chibi Clash, an eagerly anticipated release, introduced players to a charming world filled with adorable chibi characters engaged in epic battles.

In addition, Katakata Creative showcased an early demo version of their highly anticipated game, Kata. This demonstration offered a glimpse into the immersive world and unique gameplay mechanics that Katakata Creative has been diligently working on.

Also, Katakata Creative announced that they have successfully secured funding and will proceed with the full development of Kata.

The three-day event showcased not only indie game development studios but also educational institutions like De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde (CSB) who demonstrated their exceptional talents.

CSB’s contribution to the event included an exciting game titled “In Deep Space” that provided a fresh take on cooperative gaming experiences. Attendees were captivated by the innovative gameplay mechanics and immersive storyline of “In Deep Space.”

A Nostalgic and Social Experience: The Allure of Tabletop Games

Similarly, tabletop games provided a nostalgic and social experience, drawing enthusiasts who reveled in the interactive and tactile nature of these games.

During the event, organizations like UP Tabletop, a student organization based in UP Diliman, made a remarkable impact by sharing their passion for tabletop games and creating a welcoming community for enthusiasts in the tabletop area.

In addition, the group Greasy Snitches, known for Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), provided an excellent opportunity for both newbies and experienced players to enjoy thrilling D&D One-shots. I personally had the pleasure of participating in one of their sessions during the event.

As per their Facebook page, Greasy Snitches proudly welcomed 600 new players into the captivating world of D&D. Their inclusive and welcoming approach ensured that everyone, regardless of their prior experience, could delve into the immersive narratives and exciting adventures that D&D offers.

Independent games and Tabletop games became a haven for individuals seeking fresh and alternative gaming experiences, as independent game developers and tabletop games stole the spotlight during CONQuest 2023, offering a delightful departure from the controversy.
